Caffe Vineria – Italian restaurant in Stratford

Review – Wonderful pizza, wonderful service

Readers of the recent post CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER CHEESE ADDICT will be interested to hear about our recent ‘Vegan Pizza Night’ at a newly opened Italian restaurant  here in Stratford.

Whilst no longer addicted to the dairy variety there is something quite special about a veganized pizza feast … and we may just have found the perfect place.

The restaurant’s website boasts of ‘high quality foods and wines imported from Italy and personalized service’ – we couldn’t agree more.  Most vegans will be reasonably familiar with ordering pizzas from a regular menu and simply requesting they come without cheese (cue quizzical waiter raised eyebrow).  Imagine our delight when we approached a local restaurateur to book a table for our latest meet-up and he offered to source vegan cheese to make us authentic ‘cheesy’ italian pizzas!

We had a choice of vegan starters, ‘cheese’ pizza & calzone and even dairy-free almond milk ice cream for dessert.  The service was excellent and the prices were reasonable.  Even more importantly the food was delicious.  We cannot recommend this place enough – although check in advance about the availability of dairy replacements 😉

confessions of a former cheese addict

But … how do you live without cheese?!!!!…

Well if I had a penny for every time I heard that … I would be a pretty rich vegan lady by now. The truth of it is that nowadays every time I hear this question, the first thing I think of is “wow … people really don’t understand why someone becomes a vegan….” Secondly, “I wish they could know how good it feels to be free from that fatty, hormone filled, fermented gunge, taken in vain and dominating our lives.

In all honesty I am very up front about the fact that this has not always been the case. As a vegetarian for 10 years, cheese was a daily diet choice. Literally I think probably in those 10 years there was not a day that went by when cheese didn’t feature in my meal choices. This was not entirely the fault of my penchant for this salty creamy taste that I was brought up eating on toast and in little triangle sandwiches. In fact this is exactly the problem. Friends and loved ones’ first answer is to replace the meat on our plates with the next ‘best thing’ … because vegetables cannot, I mean, surely they cannot taste good just on their own … without any animal by-products at all?!

In actual fact as a vegetarian I would often boast about how much of a cheese addict I was. Often to be spotted in local pubs with a large glass of wine and an entire cheese board to myself. Du vin, du pain, du … boursin?

This reliance on cheese and food producer’s readiness to use it in ANYTHING and EVERTHING is one of the most crippling obstacles to becoming vegan. Its what brought me to crack, time and time again. It creates a secondary transition phase. After weaning yourself off meat and substituting it for cheese (willingly or reluctantly) you then have to wean yourself off the one remaining readily available meal ‘component’, the ingredient that friends who still invite you over to dinner parties can get their heads around.

However, if you are already curious about losing the dairy I guarantee you, it is only a matter of time. You already recognise everything wrong with eating this product – for all involved. After my vegan curiosities got too large to ignore I would last without it for some time but so often I cracked … for a big cheese pizza … and afterwards I was consumed with guilt. The fact is that there is nothing beneficial in eating this greasy, colourless stodge. When I finally discovered a melty vegan cheese that made acceptable vegan pizzas I remember the feeling of overwhelming relief – this meant I could actually kick this habit! And kick it I did. It does take time for some people and for me this was definitely the case.

But the fact of the matter being … as a former self confessed cheese addict I have never EVER felt healthier, happier or with a conscience as clear as I have now without dairy in my life. As a child and teenager I would suffer dreadfully with congestion and chesty coughs – never to reoccur after dropping the dairy. Vegan cheese can substitute some things but you will probably find you rarely use it. Becoming a vegan means a change in perspective – you don’t crave the same artificial, artery-clogging, processed foods anymore. You will even find yourself repulsed by the thought of it all.

So, for all of you still battling with going cheese cold-turkey, once you make it work for you, you will never look back … I promise.

The perfect 10 ingredients for a Vegan picnic

1. Something old (and faithful)
Planning a picnic or deciding what you want to bring along can actually turn into a much bigger task than you first anticipate when you rsvp – especially if you are keen to take lots of varied dishes and a good mixture of sweet and savoury. A good piece of advice is to make sure at least one of your recipes is one of your tried&tested successes. It could be something like your trusty homemade falafels or never-fail potato salad. One thing is for sure, if at least one of your dishes is a safe bet it will make for a much less stressful prepping session – and more time and confidence to try that wonderful, complicated recipe you have been dying to try for ages!

2. Something new
A picnic is THE perfect occasion to try a new recipe. Who can think of a more, relaxed and chilled-out environment for a dummy run of that super complicated but impressive looking starter? The one you would love to serve your colleagues or In-laws next time they come round for dinner! A chilled-out picnic atmosphere gives the perfect opportunity … there is no pressure or expectation to be worried about. And if it fails there are still plenty other dishes – no one will be any the wiser. Plus you will get lots of different opinions for feedback on your dish … just maybe don’t let everyone know they are being your guinea pigs first!

3. Something raw
Picnics could not be more suited to raw food. Not only will you not have the same worry you would with baked goods melting or going soft but raw food is so refreshing! The flavours are so pure and delicious. The crisp crunchiness and pure taste of raw foods are the perfect partners to a warm, summer’s afternoon spent in the park.

4. Something fizzy
Now … this is not necessarily alcoholic fizz I am talking about! However, whether it is a dash of sparkling rosé or some fizzy water with fresh mint and slices of lime … it will bring a touch of something special to your gathering. There is something lovely about fizz … I think bubbles must be synonymous with celebration in my mind. If you’re not usually a fan of fizzy water but want to keep your picnic alcohol free try buying a really good quality sparkling water and add lemon slices. Taking something to keep your drinks perfectly chilled is a must for this one!

5. A bit of vintage
Who doesn’t love a bit of vintage? In the same way that a spot of fizz will never fail to bring a special something, a touch of vintage will bring a smile to the faces of each of your guests! It could be the pattern on the plates or napkins, a stand of beautiful cupcakes or some bunting strung along the garden fence or near-by tree. There is just something wonderful about those delicate floral prints and pastel shades – no one can resist! Perhaps you could plan an entirely vintage vegan picnic and have some good old-fashioned tunes playing on a portable retro-styled radio … if you do then please invite us too! 🙂

6. Grass !
Whether you are fully equipped with your water-proof underlined picnic blanket or this is an impromptu lunch-hour outing to the park … the spot of ground that you choose as your picnic place is perhaps the most important of all. Choose a spot partially in shade, partially in bright sunshine with luscious, long blades of grass. Not that sad patchy area, mostly dust and moss … well trodden by others enroute to greener pastures. It may well be the closest but take the time to wander further to find that perfect patch of green – it will be worth it. There are few things in life more pleasing than the simple pleasure of taking off ones sandals and placing the soles of ones bare feet ‘dans l’herbe’! Enough said.

7. Colours

This point could almost go without saying. I don’t think you could find a more colourful, enticing and visually pleasing food type than vegan cuisine. All the fruits and fresh veggies – glowing with goodness! This is especially true when it comes to raw dishes. Who in their right mind wouldn’t choose that over a plate of beige or brown stodge?! It is important not to forget the visual aspect of your picnic. A wide palette of colours will add to the backdrop, atmosphere and provide a constant talking point … you want to make your food look too good to eat!

8. A camera
Now it is almost impossible to set out a veritable vegan picnic feast, rich in colour and delicious goodness, and not take a picture! In the time of social media presence and the growing interest surrounding veganism and plant-based diets, beautiful photos of vegan picnics will help spread the word no end. You will also be so proud of yourself I dare you to even be able to resist taking a boastful snapshot – no filter needed!

9. Re-useable equipment

This is an important point when it comes to preparing your picnic in advance. There is something that makes me feel quite uneasy about all the waste and disposable products left behind following all the picnic fun. Especially when considering the lack of ready recycling facilities in most parks or riversides. As environmentally conscious fellow green-beans I’m sure you will agree there is something quite disappointing after a wonderful vegan picnic to then take most of the non-edible items you brought over the already overflowing black litter bins. Bring re-usable plates, cutlery and cups – ones that you take home, wash and then bring out again the next time. The same goes for bringing food in Tupperware to avoid using film and foil if possible. And of course it goes without saying … anything else that can be recycled – napkins etc. – take them back to add them to your normal recyclable domestic waste.

10. Non vegans !
There is something very special about a group of people coming together, sharing food with each other, talking and enjoying each other’s company. This may seem to some like a very odd perfect ingredient to a ‘vegan’ picnic. However, if there is anything we have learnt from our meetup group picnics so far it is how valuable these events can be to those already curious about a meat-free diet. Every vegan meal eaten and enjoyed by a non-vegan is a cause for celebration! It is one step further to another person taking the pledge to listen to their heart, conscience and health when it comes to their food. Whilst in many cases this guest who shares in your marvelous vegan feast may never make that final step to becoming completely animal-free, every plant based meal they decide to incorporate or every positive comment they cite when the topic of conversation comes up is a positive achievement in the growth of veganism. One of the most enjoyable aspects of a picnic is the chance to taste new dishes you have never tried or heard of before and exchange recipes with their creator, giving you new ideas to go away and try at home. Imagine how happy this would make you if this were to be the case for all the potential meat-reducers you invite to your next perfect vegan picnic.

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan you might already know how challenging it can be to follow a lifestyle that is different from those of your friends and family.  This is even more apparent if you are living in a small town that doesn’t cater for your dietary requirements.  Wouldn’t life be easier if you could find places to go to and people to meet who are on your wavelength and share your interests?!

That’s exactly what we did!!  We found each other through Meetup and started this blog as a medium to share our passion for veganism with the local community.

This blog runs alongside our Meetup group by the same name.  The intention is to provide a forum for continuing discussions/interests shared between members at events as well as a platform to bring those local and not so local together in the spirit of celebrating all things vegan or raw.  Our aim is to create much more awareness of healthy, plant-based lifestyles and help you understand how simple and delicious it could be!

We are over the moon to be sharing a blog with fellow Stratfordians and the wider community on a subject that we hold so close to our hearts!  Any vegan will already know how the choice to lead an animal-free life is so much more than a dietary choice – the feeling of leading such a healthy and compassionate lifestyle is a blessing!

If what we write appeals to you or strikes a cord then all comments or ideas are very welcome! You can leave us a comment or send us an email on stratfordonrave@yahoo.co.uk.

Mandia – Spanish Tapas Bar in Stratford Upon Avon

Vegan Rating – ♥♥♥♥
Review  – Good food, Cosy ambience and gorgeous cocktails!
Mandia is a little Spanish tapas bar on Church Street that serves some amazing vegan dishes and lovely cocktails. We organised one of our meetups at this place and the service was brilliant. The staff were very friendly and cheerful. They readily agreed to do a bespoke vegan menu for us when we went in to enquire about the vegan options.
The food was delicious. We tried almost all of the dishes on the vegan menu and my personal favourite was Tumbet vegetarian bake and stuffed peppers – so very yummy! I should definitely mention that this place does one of the best cocktails in town – I had a vanilla cocktail which was just utterly delicious. They also do 2 for 1 cocktails on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5 -7. So if you fancy a weekday cocktail treat, then I highly recommend this place – Perfect for an evening of two or for a catchup with friends!
